Taking the Doors Off Your Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Wrangler with Doors Removed

Off-road enthusiasts swear by the Jeep Wrangler for its capability, iconic build, and customizable features. Removable parts have always been a part of the Wrangler legacy, and many have taken their doors off to add a bit of free spirit to their Dunlap drives. Learn how to take the doors off your Jeep Wrangler here, with this handy guide from Sam Leman Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Peoria

How To Remove the Doors on a Jeep

First, roll your windows down to protect the glass (if your model has windows), then take the following steps:

  • Disconnect any power cables by removing the footwell under your dashboard or by the b-pillar. This should pop off by removing the clip that attaches it.
  • Remove the door straps by gently lifting them off the hooks.
  • Remove the bolt from the door hinges and gently slide the door off and away.

Make sure you store the doors in a safe and dry place, and be sure to lube the door hinges to help the door slide off more easily next time you take the doors off your Wrangler.

Why Would I Take the Doors off My Wrangler?

Taking the doors off your Jeep helps lower the weight of your vehicle, and thus improves fuel economy. But outdoor enthusiasts will tell you that’s the most minor of reasons to take the doors off your Jeep. The real reason is that whether you’re driving on the pavement around Galesburg or headed off on dirt paths, keeping your doors off enables a fully-immersive driving experience like no other.

Outdoor enthusiasts rave about Jeep’s removable panels, and the tighter connection to nature they feel while enjoying their drives – especially on rough terrain, when they can see out the sides and straight down to the ground.

How to Take a Top Off a Jeep

Wondering how to take a top off a Jeep? That’s better left to a certified Jeep service department. Attempting to remove yours on your own risks permanently damaging the top, considering its size and difficult maneuverability.

It’s more than worth the appointment, though – you’ll feel like you’re floating in your Wrangler model with no doors and no roof.
